Peter Cope's summer update for 2023

RL360 sailor, Peter Cope, has recently returned from competing in this year's WASZP National Championships. In this blog, Peter shares his personal highlights and reflects upon his performance in the four day event.

Last week, I competed at the WASZP UK National Championships at Rutland Sailing Club. I started the week practising hard before the event, and began familiarising myself with the venue and honing my skills. The first day of racing took place on Thursday which consisted of one long distance race and three Nascar races around a square course, finishing with a slalom series for the top 17 boats. I finished 13th in the long distance race after a tactical error, but I had a really good start and placed second around the first mark! In the slalom, I sailed a really consistent series, finishing 5th overall which was a highlight of my week.

Then on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we competed in championship racing around a traditional windward / leeward course. This racing was really tricky and tiring, but fun with the wind up around 20 knots every day, easily gusting up to 25 knots at times. I sailed a really consistent series with all my counting results within the top 10 which I was really proud of. I finished up 8th overall and top junior (U18).

I want to thank RL360 for their support allowing me to go and compete at these events. Looking ahead to the rest of the season at the end of this month I will be competing at the National 18 Class National Championships in Port St Mary and the later on in August I will be going to Pwllheli to compete in the 420 Class National Championships.

I’m really excited for what the rest of the season will bring after a good start!
